Vintage 1930s German Family Photos!

I love old, historic photos, especially ones of my own family. When writing Crushing the Red Flowers, I dusted off antique albums and shoe boxes stuffed with vintage photos from 1930s Germany. These 1930s German Photos were helpful in building my fictional characters as well setting the novel’s tone. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • A fun day for city boys to the country.
  • Bike repair back then doesn’t look so different from today.
  • And how awesome is this? One of our relatives worked in film. This is an actual behind-the-scenes shot of filming “Kunstlerleibe.”
  • German WWI soldiers. Okay, maybe this isn’t from the 1930s, but it’s still a pretty interesting picture.
  • Postcards of pre-war Hannover.

  • My Grandfather boarding the MS St. Louis, October, 1938 in Hamburg when he emigrated to Philadelphia. He traveled alone since his parents were unable to acquire VISAs.
  • My grandfather, Herbert, and his mother. This loving little boy turned into a doting, devoted grandpa.
  • Again, this picture is not from the 1930s, but it’s so cool, I couldn’t resist adding it. It’s of my uncle participating in a motorcycle obstacle race in Bautzen around 1952.
