Using Your Family History For Creative Inspiration: I will first speak about my journey to becoming an author and why I wrote Crushing the Red Flowers. I’ll then discuss three methods students can use to examine their own heritage or family experiences to find writing ideas. A few children will play a fun, interactive trivia game show to demonstrate how to link writing to their family’s experience with recent current events. I’ll end with a Q&A. Research & Roadblocks in Writing Fiction: I will discuss how I wrote Crushing the Red Flowers and speak about my approach to research. In this workshop, students will learn how to develop characters, how to use primary and secondary research, how to incorporate other art forms to set mood, and how to identify possible roadblocks, including experiencing strong emotions when writing about difficult topics. Author skype sessions are a personal way to energize students about reading. In this session, I will introduce myself and discuss why I chose to write Crushing the Red Flowers. I will then speak about my journey to becoming an author, provide examples of my extensive research, and close with a Q&A.

Writer Workshops
60 minutes for new & mid-career writers.
From Draft to Launch: What to Expect and How to Give Yourself An Edge: The time before your manuscript is published can make or break your book. This workshop sheds light on what to expect by providing writers a comprehensive plan for two critical time periods: 1. the time between completing a draft and securing a contract and 2. the time between the contract and the book launch. Period 1 will cover topics such as networking, reversions, contests for unpublished manuscripts, and comp titles. Period 2 will cover topics such as blurbs, author websites, and publicity plans. Writers will learn practical resources and walk away with a better understanding of expectations.
